A subdomain is a separate website. It has it's own email services and you have direct admin control. By analogy, choosing a subdomain is rather like renting an apartment in a block of flats, it is cheaper but subject to tighter restrictions.
A subdomain is website which is a 'child' of another. <www.foo.com> could be your main site, so <wwww.child.foo.com> would be subdomain of <www.foo.com>. the word 'child' wiould be replaced with whatever would seem relevant to the subdomain's purpose, e.g. there are several subdomain's of fwbo.net, including isleofwight.fwbo.net.
However, the analogy above is a good one; you don't have your own domain name, so you are always renting that 'apartment' — if you decide to move on, you can't take your domain name with you. Requests for any major extensions (e.g. installing a database) are limited by the services you can buy in from the local service provider, and these may not be the cheapest or most flexible.
All FwboNet subdomains, however, still benefit from unrestricted bandwidth and server storage space. [ Return to Price List page ]
This is very different from having a directory within another site: <www.foo.com/folder/file.html> - you would be renting an apartment in a block of flats not just a cupboard in someone else's apartment!
This is a choice about the software which runs the webserver your website sits on. The choice has no appreciable bearing on the accessibility of your website, but it does affect the services that run elements of your website. If you know that you want to use ASP scripting, or Microsoft FrontPage extensions, ask for a Windows server. We default to a Linux server, but this can be changed at any time.
